English

The English program at Mount St. Joseph Academy stresses all aspects of language arts with special attention given to reading and writing skills—critical to college success. Students are encouraged to read daily, not only during the school year, but also throughout the summer. Students are usually grouped homogeneously—first-year placements are based on eighth grade progress reports, teacher recommendations, and the MSJ entrance examination.

English Honors students must achieve a grade point average of A- or have an average of B+ and the recommendation of their teacher to continue in the program. English coursework covers the literary genres in depth—short story, poetry, essay, play, myths, and novel—and includes the completion of a research paper using the MLA (Modern Language Association) format and emphasizing good sentence structure. Vocabulary and grammar usage are stressed in preparation for PSATs (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test). The goals of the English program are to encourage lifelong reading, to develop solid writing skills, a broad working vocabulary, and a sound use of grammar.
